Garry completed an Engineering Degree and started work at a major power station, before transitioning into IT which was used for process control. After doing postgraduate studies in Computer Science, he transferred to Head Office where he managed various flavours of proprietary Unix, before discovering Linux in the late 1990s and becoming a fan of the upstart OS.
Garry moved to working for a Manages Service provider, and became the technical team lead for networks, security, Unix and storage on-site at the client premises, with a focus on technical troubleshooting of complex issues, managing compliance with the SLA, and preparing bids and variations for work outside of the SLA.
After five years there, Garry moved to a large law enforcement agency, first as a Linux Engineer and later he founded and managed a new team responsible for Storage and Backups. While there, he and his team managed a variety of hardware from various tier 1 vendors, namely Brocade, Dell, IBM, Mellanox, NetApp and Pure Storage, as well as complex software products such as Spectrum Protect and Spectrum Scale. Garry also has a strong focus on instrumentation as he has a firm belief that being able to generate various metrics is vital for capacity planning. Garry worked here for over 15 years before taking a short break from working due to personal issues.
During his downtime, Garry enjoys exploring outback Australia, cycling and spending time with the family.
